Barkley was stray that was picked up by animal control near Atlanta, Georgia. He was brought to the Hound in Pounds, a local shelter, and Janet Kern almost had tears in her eyes when she first saw the poor dog.
Kern is the Vice President of the shelter and she shared that Barkley was a mess when they found him. His eyes were ruptured, his teeth were in bad condition, and his fur was matted to his skin. The dog is completely blind and was all alone in the streets until he was picked up.
They took him to the vet to get checked. The doctor recommended that they remove both of his eyes immediately. he went through surgery and was discharged soon after. The shelter posted his story on social media in their hopes to find him a new home.
Luckily, they did not have to wait long before somebody volunteered to foster Barkley. The shelter received a message from Deputy Earl Hanners in which he expressed his family’s willingness to take in the poor dog. He said that they have experience in taking care of blind dogs.
Officer Hanners is known for his love for animals. In fact, this is not the first time that he saved a dog’s life. He and his wife had fostered for the shelter before. He has seven rescue dogs in their home and Barkley was definitely a welcomed addition.
Hanners eventually decided to adopt Barkley. He said that they knew that being a 10-year-old blind dog will not make him a popular candidate for adoption. The world can be dark but his family can assure him a bright life. Barkley was shy at first but he eventually came out of his shell.
He is now living happily with his new family. He plays with his best friend Bridget, another abandoned dog that Hanner saved. Thanks to the officer, Barkley is now safe and loved.
