As if by a miracle, a poodle survived a deadly fire that razed the seaside village of Mati in Greece.
Mati, a popular holiday destination east of Athens, endured the worst of the Greek wildfires. The conflagration destroyed 500 homes, claiming around a hundred human lives and hundreds of animal ones.
Some individuals were able to run to the water, thereby escaping death. Many others were not so lucky—illegal constructions within the area cut off potential exit routes, trapping people.
Once the wildfire had died, animal rescuers combed the ravaged landscape for any survivors. It was one week later when they discovered a poodle mix huddled in his hidey-hole.
Volunteer Artemis Kyriakopoulou was the one who spotted an outdoor brick oven and figured that it wouldn’t hurt to look inside.
There, she saw the nervous animal trying to stay hidden in a corner. The dog had managed to find a refuge from the worst of the inferno, but he wasn’t entirely unscathed. The poodle’s fur had yellowed from being singed, and his eyelashes had been burned off.
The mutt was so terrified as a consequence of his traumatic experience that it took the rescuers hours of talking to him gently and trying to lure him out with food before he finally climbed out of the oven.
When he did, though, the pooch was friendly, greeting the volunteers with a wag of his tail and gratefully eating the food they had set out for him.
Afterward, the rescuers brought the poodle mix to a veterinarian to get a much-needed medical checkup as well as a shower. The canine was placed on a course of antibiotics, and then he went to Diana Topali, his foster mom.
The dog also received a new name, Loukoumaki, which roughly translates to “confection.” Unfortunately, the rescuers have not been able to find his owner; it’s possible that they perished in the blaze.
Still, Loukoumaki is now in a safe place, and we’re hoping he has found the loving forever home that he deserves after his terrible ordeal.
